We just got back from the Market Square Show in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. We happened to be about an hour from Red Lion where the Family Heirloom Weavers is located, so we stopped by to tour their mill. They are the weavers of the fabric we use for our heirloom line of bags. They are a third generation family-owned business where they reproduce 18th and 19th century patterns and weave them on antique looms. They have been commissioned to create textiles for museums, movie sets, and historic homes etc. We met them last June at the Country Living Fair in Rhinebeck, New York and immediately fell in love with their fabric! We asked them whether we could use their fabric to make handbags, and thus the heirloom line was born! As of right now we have two styles of bags in their fabrics, but we are working on a few new designs so stay tuned! They change their patterns often so if you fall in love with a fabric you need to be aware that we won’t have an unlimited supply of each individual pattern.
We learned so much about the process of weaving the fabric during our tour of the mill that we came home with a renewed appreciation for how much work and time goes into the process, and a deep respect for their vision and passion for preserving a little bit of history and culture through their work!
The mechanics of the loom was in and of itself quite fascinating to see in work!
